Abdallah Eyes World Kickboxing Title in Lockport

The Highly Ranked Kickboxer Will Try to End His Career On a High Note, Back Where it First Began

By Tom Martin
News 4 Sports

Guess where the curtain will drop on Amer Abadallah as he fights for a World Kickboxing Title?

“We had offers to do it in Dubai, we had offers to do it in Las Vegas, a couple of bigger cities,” Abadallah says.

“But Lockport’s home.”

The 39-year-old kickboxer will fight for a title in his adopted hometown, where he grew up after moving from Jordan, when his father won a bid to own eight McDonald’s restaurants.

Abdallah has tried to set up a title bout in the past, but in November of 2015, Gareth Richards backed out of the fight at the last minute.

“Gareth Richards decided not to get on that plane, not to come,” Abdallah said. “It was a very tough pill to swallow, for me, my team, my community, my supporters, everybody.”

Now Abdallah will face Daniel Hughes sometime around 9 p.m. Saturday night. The two have already appeared for weigh-ins, leaving nothing else left but the bout in the ring.

“My fans have been very loyal to me, fiercely loyal to me. And they’ve been with me throughout everything,” Abdallah said. “And it’s only right and only proper to do things the right way. When we’re ready to end it and on a big scale like this, it’s gotta be in Lockport.”

Doors open at 5:00pm at Kenan Arena.

Abdallah Gets His Shot at World Title in Kickboxing

The Buffalo News

Like any kid picking up a sport for the first time, Amer Abdallah had dreams of winning the world championship in kickboxing.

Not everyone gets an opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream, let alone get a second chance at making it come true. Consider Abdallah blessed as he once again is in position to make some history.

The 38-year-old will try to become the first Western New Yorker to win a world kickboxing championship in his hometown as Abdallah will face Englishman Daniel Hughes (23-3) for the vacant World Kickboxing Association cruiserweight title in the main event of a 14-fight card that begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Kenan Center in Lockport.

Abdallah brings a 16-0 record into the fight, which hopefully will go off without any issues.

The last time Abdallah was scheduled to fight for the championship was in November, but his opponent – then champion Gareth Richards of South Wales – didn’t make the trip. Abdallah, whose company Lace Up Promotions organized the card, said the World Kickboxing Association stripped Richards of the crown shortly afterwards, setting the stage for Saturday.

The lengths it has taken Abdallah, who turned professional in 2000, to reach this point is the main reason he doesn’t want to leave anything to chance in the ring. He wants to put Hughes down hard and fast.

“There’s a lot riding on this fight,” said Abdallah, who is ranked No. 2 in his weight class and now lives and trains in Las Vegas but still considers Lockport his hometown. “I’m not interested in letting someone decide if I won the round… I want to end this early. This has to be the exclamation point of my career.”

Abdallah, who has received advice from Team Mesi during his career, will be accompanied to the ring by former No. 1 contender and unbeaten Ring 44 Buffalo Boxing Hall of Famer Joe Mesi.

Only general admission tickets ($25) remain for the event, which includes 11 amateur bouts. They can be purchased at Kenan Arena.

Lockport Hosts WKA World Title Fight Tonight: Abdallah vs. Hughes

By John D’Onofrio
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

For many, tonight’s professional fight card at the Kenan Arena is just the beginning.

For Lockport native Amer Abdallah, it’s a closing chapter.

Abdallah, one of the Lock City’s greatest ring champions and life-long MMA ambassadors, will take on England’s Daniel Hughes tonight for the World Kickboxing Association Cruiserweight Championship of the World.

It’s Western New York’s first ever WKA world title fight featuring a WNY native.

“I feel strong. It’s the best I’ve ever felt in my career,” said Abdallah, 16-0, who currently holds the WKA United States Heavyweight Championship belt and WKA Inter-Continental Light Heavyweight crown.

“Tomorrow night will be feast,” said Abdallah, 38, at Friday night’s official weigh-in at the Seneca Niagara Casino Poker Room.

Hughes, 23-3, is hoping three’s a charm tonight. It’s his third to the United States. The father of three from Swindon, England, is the No. 2-ranked cruiserweight in the world and the current WKA British cruiserweight champion.

Abdallah, looking lean, mean and focused, weighed in at 189.4 pounds. Hughes, representing Scorpion Muay Thai, was a pound heavier at 190.4.

“I’ve been kickboxing since I was 4-years-old. My father’s my coach,” said Hughes, who was accompanied by his father, Christopher.

When asked what his plan of attack would be tonight, Hughes said, “My plan is to win — I wont give any secrets away. It’s a little too early for that in the morning paper. It will be a hard fought fight. I’m going out there and fight hard. I’m British.”

Meanwhile, other locals, including Joe Taylor and Eric Plumeri, weighed in for tonight’s fight card. Both Lockportians will be making their professional debuts for Lace-Up Promotions.

The “Son of a Legend” Taylor weighed in at 182.2 pounds. The two-time Golden Gloves champion and former semi-professional football star running back will take on Rodolfo Barcello of Syracuse.

Lockport’s “Candyman” Plumeri (18-2 as an amateur) weighed in at 164.4 pounds. The popular middleweight and proud father will face Evander Russ of Syracuse in his first pro fight.

Among others at Friday night’s weigh-in included “Super Fly” Sean Felton (167), Ayanna Tramont (165.4) and Erin Morris (144).

Felton will take on Corey Vail for the Lace-Up middleweight title. But not before the pair was locked in a classic stare down after weighing in. Tramont will vie for the women’s middleweight title when she battles Canadian Mindy Hall.

The Master of Ceremonies for Friday night’s weigh-ins and tonight’s ring announcer is Chris Gullo. The official fight photographer is the talented Jay Stoos.

VIP tables, VIP seating and ringside seating is sold out for the event. General admission tickets are still available, either in person at the Lockport Athletic Club or online at Ticketfly.com. Tickets will also be available at the door at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Among the many local sponsors of the event are Seneca Poker, Mulvey Construction, All Metal Works, Executive Landscaping, Papa Leos, BLING!, C&M Plumbing, Aquaholicks, Scott Cain – Cain, Witlin, Dry, Lockport Athletic Club and Collins Accounting.

Lockport’s Amer Abdallah Preps for World Title Fight

By Nick Filipowski
WKBW

He’s the 2nd ranked kickboxer in the world and already owns the Intercontinental Championship.

Now, the only thing standing in between Amer Abdallah and the World Cruiserweight title is British kickboxing champion Daniel Hughes.

“I’ve had great champions like “Baby” Joe Mesi, Ross “The Boss” Thompson, all the Buffalo greats that have paved the way and enabled me to get to where I am,” Abdallah said.

“The only thing left to do now is Saturday night go dump this guy on his face.”

Buffalo’s Ayanna Tramont and Sean Felton Jr. will also enter the ring for a shot at claiming Middleweight Championships on Saturday.

“Just another day in my book. It’s like overtime baby,” Felton said.  “I just have to have fun tomorrow night and get the job done.”

Ring-side seats for Saturday’s bouts are already sold out, but general admission tickets are still available for $25. The fights in Lockport at Kenan Arena begin 6 p.m.
